The current revision of the International Standard ISO 9001 "Quality Management Systems -
Requirements" was published in September 2015. The document is now in its fifth edition, the
latest step in a journey that has seen quality culture evolve all around the world over the past three
decades.
It marked an important step for voluntary technical standardization, given the great popularity of
the Standard1 and the multiplicity of situations related to it. As a matter of fact, ISO 9001 applies to
organizations of all types and sizes, and the community that has a vested interest in the Standard
includes, besides companies and their customers, local governments, regulatory bodies, experts in
management consulting, certification bodies, accreditation bodies, technicians, trainers, auditors, etc.
Not only the revised ISO 9001 was innovative in terms of contents and ambitious as for its objectives.
Inspired also by the principles of sustainability, the Standard recognized companies as "thinking
entities" in constant interaction with an increasingly complex ecosystem - characterized by the
proliferation of relationships, the complication of constraints, the acceleration of technological
development, a more and more challenging and sophisticated demand - and presented itself as
a tool to best address this complexity, so as to ensure the compliance of products/services and
customer satisfaction.
