bi0space: Industry 4.0 Enhanced Digital Product Passports and Circular Economy Dataspaces for Sustainable Bio-Based Industries
Information
About project
The bi0SpaCE project aims to support the digital and circular transition of bio-based industries in Europe by providing innovative solutions for the creation of environmentally and socially sustainable bio-based products and services.
The main objective is the development of the bi0S platform, an open-access digital ecosystem integrating advanced technologies, guidance frameworks, and standards to facilitate large-scale adoption of circular economy solutions in bio-based value chains.
Among the key technologies developed, bi0SpaCE will implement Industry 4.0-enhanced Digital Product Passports (DPPs), linked to an International Dataspace (IDS) compliant with circular economy requirements. These tools will enable secure and transparent data exchange on the sustainability performance of bio-based products, increasing trust in green claims and facilitating the monitoring of circularity across the entire value chain.
The project involves a consortium of 9 partners from 5 EU Member States and 2 associated countries and will be implemented over a 36-month period (from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027). The developed solutions will be tested in four key bio-based industry sectors:
- Paperboard production.
- Eco-industrial parks with bio-based energy and product producers and consumers.
- Plant-based products and cosmetics.
- Bio-derived industrial chemicals.

Project objectives
Develop an open-access digital ecosystem (bi0S platform) to facilitate the adoption of circular economy solutions in bio-based industries.
Design and test Industry 4.0-enhanced Digital Product Passports (DPPs) connected to a Circular Economy Dataspace.
Promote the adoption of guidance frameworks and standards to ensure interoperability and secure sustainability data exchange.
Demonstrate the potential of developed solutions in four strategic bio-based sectors.
Provide transparency for consumers regarding green claims and the environmental impact of products.
Concrete actions
- Development of an interoperable digital platform for the circular economy in the bio-based sector.
- Creation of dynamic and decentralized DPPs, enabling secure data sharing.
- Implementation of pilot case studies in various bio-based sectors.
- Definition of guidelines and best practices for the use of DPPs and the Circular Economy Dataspace.
- Integration with existing standards and regulations, supporting European policies on circularity and sustainability.
