Biomass to bio/E-methanol by Breakthrough SOEC-based Process: the BeBOP innovation

Information

About project

The BeBOP project (Biomass to bio/E-methanol by Breakthrough SOEC-based Process) aims to revolutionize the methanol production process, one of the most important chemical feedstocks worldwide, by developing an innovative approach that integrates a solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) into a biomass gasification process.

The primary goal of BeBOP is to demonstrate a cost-effective and scalable process for producing bio-methanol from residual biomass, achieving a carbon conversion efficiency above 95%. Thanks to this innovation, it will be possible to drastically reduce CO₂ emissions and contribute to the decarbonization of the chemical and energy industries while lowering production costs.

Through a TRL6 pilot plant, BeBOP aims to validate a process capable of doubling methanol productivity compared to conventional systems, making it competitive with fossil-based methanol. The project also focuses on valorizing gasification residues, recovering high-value components, and promoting a sustainable and circular industrial model.

Objectives

Project objectives

Technological development

Develop an innovative plant that integrates an electrolyzer cell into the methanol production process from biomass, increasing efficiency and productivity.

Carbon efficiency

Achieve a carbon efficiency above 95%, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions associated with methanol production.

Cost reduction

Lower methanol production costs to less than €250/ton, making bio-methanol competitive with fossil alternatives.

Environmental sustainability

Prevent the emission of over 30 million tons of CO₂ annually, contributing to the decarbonization of Europe’s chemical industry.

Residue valorization

Recover high-value components from biomass gasification residues, promoting a circular economy.

Results

Concrete actions

  • Pilot implementation: Build a TRL6 pilot plant ready to be scaled and replicated by the European biomass-based industry.
  • Bio-methanol production: Increase the share of methanol production from renewable sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Environmental impact: Reduce CO₂ emissions in the chemical sector by 3%, supporting European climate targets.
  • Industrial competitiveness: Maintain the final product’s quality at competitive costs, creating new direct and indirect jobs in the sector.
